This article is based on the experience of the construction control service of the customer and represents a comparative analysis of applying tools with a similar design: a laser total station and a 3D Laser Scanning System (LSS). Based on various criteria, the following tools are compared: the Nikon Nivo 1.C laser total station and the Trimble X9 3D LSS which have similar technical specifications. The advantages and disadvantages of LSS are noted based on the technical specifications provided by the manufacturer. The article lists the main types of work performed by the geodetic control service at a high-rise construction site, as well as the possibilities of using these instruments during the work. The article also discusses the possibility of complete rejecting the use of a laser total station as the main control tool and replacing it with LSS. The construction site “Residential Complex with an Underground Parking Lot” at the address: Moscow, Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment, 14, Building 1 “Capital Towers” was taken as a test site. It was concluded that LSSs cannot become the only control tool, but is a highly specialized means of conducting monitoring works which with consistent improvement of the system can be used in a wider range of works in the construction of highrise buildings and structures
